Debate about washing in salon

Let’s Talk About It: The Wash Debate Between Stylists and Clients

If you’ve been on social media or in a salon chair lately, you’ve probably seen or heard the back-and-forth: Should washing and conditioning always be included in a hair service?

This topic sparks a lot of debate between stylists and clients—and as a professional, I think it’s time to clear the air.

The Tradition of “A Wash Comes With It”

In the past, it was almost expected that any salon service would include a wash and condition. It was part of the experience, part of the standard. But times have changed. The way stylists structure services has evolved, and so have clients’ needs and preferences.

Many stylists today don’t automatically include washing in every service. And here’s why: time, customization, and respect for what the client actually wants.

Stylists Can Tell When Hair Is Clean

Let’s be honest—clients know when their hair is clean, and stylists can tell too. If you book a wash and blow-dry, a professional can absolutely tell whether you followed through or not. We can feel residue, buildup, and overall hair condition with our hands and tools. And although putting hair under water lets us assess health even better, it’s not the only way we gauge the state of your strands.

Washing gives a deeper understanding, yes—but it’s not the only way we recognize what’s going on with your hair.

Why Some Stylists Separate the Wash

Personally, when I’m doing thermal styles (like silk presses or flat ironing), I don’t require you to book a wash and condition. For those types of services, I like to ensure that the hair is prepped in a way that provides the desired results.

When it comes to braiding services, I give you the option:
➡️ If you want to come pre-washed to save time and cost, that’s fine.
➡️ If you prefer me to handle the wash and condition, you can add that to your booking—but because that takes extra time, there is an additional charge.

It’s not about being unfair or cutting corners—it’s about valuing time (yours and mine) and giving you the flexibility to choose what works best for your hair and your budget.

Why Clear Communication Matters

The bottom line?
✔️ The stylist-client relationship works best when both sides are clear and honest.
✔️ Stylists can tell when hair is clean—there’s no need to worry that you have to prove anything.
✔️ If you’re unsure what’s expected, just ask! A quick conversation before booking can avoid confusion and ensure a smooth, stress-free appointment.
